Sports Activities of winners

NSS Unit

Through NSS unit our students have developed a passion to serve for the society. A weeklong NSS camp is organized every year by adopting a village near the campus and conduct medical / eye camp, veterinary camp, cleaning the village, etc.

The NSS unit of Mailam Engineerng College, in association with Anna University, Chennai had organized a 7-Day camp at the village Kanniyam which is located in Villupuram District. The camp was inaugurated on 17th March 2016 and was wounded up on 23rd March 2016. The underlined motto of the weeklong camp was “Healthy Youth For Healthy India”.

On 17th March, 2016, the Inaugural function was held at 10.30 am in a grand manner. It began with the prayer followed by the Welcome Address given by Dr. S. Senthil, the Principal of Mailam Engineering College. Shri. M. Dhanasekaran, Chairman &Managing Director of MEC presided over the function. Shri. S.V. Sugumaran, the Vice Chairman of MEC and Dr. K. Narayanasamy, the Secretary of MEC felicitated the Inaugural function. The president of Kanniyam Village Panchayat Shri. S. Nandha Gopal and the Vice president Shri A. Baskar were present on that auspicious occasion and addressed the gathering. All the members of the Panchayat had made their presence. Mr .M. Balamurugan, NSS Program Officer, proposed Vote of Thanks.

To create a lifelong memory and to promote a green serene environment, the volunteers planted a lot of saplings of various kinds like Almond, Neem, Banyan and Babul all along the road side which connects the village Kanniam to the National Highway. NSS volunteers worked tirelessly and enthusiastically in digging pits for the plantation. The local youths too, on their own accord, came forward to assist our volunteers. Shri. N.M. Devaraj, Founder, Asian Water and Environment Development Organization, Villupuram had been invited as the guest of honur. He, in his address, stressed the need for preserving water for future and also insisted the need for Clean and Green environment. After the program, the volunteers planted a lot of herbal plants inside the college campus. In the afternoon, at 3.00 pm. Dr. Senthil, the Principal of Mailam Engineering College gave a lecture on “Human Resources and Rural Development”.

On 18th March 2016, all through the forenoon, to protect the saplings from cattle, the volunteers put fencing. On the same day, in the afternoon, a seminar had been organized. Shri. M.K.C. Rajendiran, Organizer, Association for Cultural Awareness, Villupuram, delivered a lecture on “ Pudhu Yugam Paddaipom, Ini Oru Ulagum Seivom”. It was very informative and brought a positive change in the attitude of the students.

Awareness on Plastic Usage

Plastic awareness campaign was conducted by our NSS volunteers on 20.03.2022 at Veedur village to promote the reduction of plastic usage. The campaign aimed to educate individuals about the environmental impact of plastic. Objective of the campaign is to educate the public and improve awareness on the consequences of plastic usage, including pollution, waste generation, and harm to ecosystems. Involve the local community in the campaign, fostering a sense of collective responsibility towards plastic waste reduction.

Campaign materials such as brochures, posters were created to convey information about the negative impacts of plastic on the environment. These materials highlighted statistics, case studies, and practical tips for reducing plastic usage.

Blood Donation Camp

National Service Scheme along with Youth Red Cross, Villupuram organized a     blood donation camp at the college premises on 09.09.2022. Our Honorable Chairman Shri M. Dhanasekaran inaugurated the function and our respected Vice Chairman Shri S.V. Sugumaran facilitated the Blood donators. Our Principal Dr. S. Senthil and Dean Dr. R. Rajappan Welcomed everyone. A team of medical officers from Villupuram and Youth Red Cross members participated. There was an overwhelming response from the students. 226 students actively participated and donated blood. The camp was ended with vote of thanks.

Clean India Campaign

NSS team of our College organized “Clean India Campaign & Tree Plantation” for prevention of dengue fever at the Primary health center, mailam on 21.10.2021. Our Principal Dr.S. Senthil, Dean Dr.R. Rajappan and staff members inaugurated the campaign. NSS volunteers cleaned bushes and stagnated garbages in the campus.

Drug Abuse Awareness

NSS team organized Drug Abuse Awareness camp at Mailam village on 11.03.2022, Principal, Dr. S. Senthil inaugurated the programme. Team of doctors from Mailam primary health center explained the risks, consequences, and dangers associated with drug use, as well as fostering prevention and education about hazards of drugs. First and foremost, drug awareness emphasizes the importance of understanding the various types of drugs and their effects on the mind and body. It provides information about both legal and illegal substances, including alcohol, tobacco, prescription medications, and illicit drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. By being knowledgeable about these substances, individuals can make informed decisions and avoid potential harm. Also they advised the volunteers to use this camp as a learning opportunity by serving the nation

School Campus Sanitation

Mailam Engineering College (MEC) believes that students don’t care how much we have and know, but all they have to know is how much we care for their future goals and aspirations. Veterinary Camp

Veterinary Camp was inaugurated at Thazhuthali village on 23.03.2022 by our College Principal Dr. S. Senthil around 9.00 a.m. Veterinary doctors from Mailam Veterinary Hospital, diagnosed and gave treatment for the goats, cows, dogs, and hens. Around 150 animals were treated in the camp. Vaccination, deworming, and awareness were given by the doctors. Around 90 farmers got benefited from this camp. 65 NSS volunteers participated in the camp, with the help and support of the officials, and villagers the camp went successful and ended at 2 p.m.

Village Hygiene Drive

Village Hygiene Drive was organized by our NSS volunteers on 08.05.2022 at Pombur Village. The initiative aimed to create a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents, enhance community pride, and promote sustainable waste management practices. Several clean-up drives were organized throughout the village, targeting public spaces such as streets, parks, playgrounds, and common areas. Volunteers worked together to collect waste materials ensuring proper segregation of recyclable and non-recyclable materials. Special attention was given to sensitive areas, such as water bodies, to prevent pollution and maintain ecological balance. Increased awareness and understanding of proper waste management practices among the Villagers.

Tree Seedling Planting

Seedling plantation initiative carried out by our NSS volunteers on 12. 04. 2022 at Sendur village. Around 100 saplings were planted by the NSS volunteers. The aim of the project was to contribute to environmental conservation by planting tree seedlings. Objective of this activity is to enhance biodiversity, increase the diversity of plant species, contributing to the preservation of local ecosystems and to prevent soil erosion. Species selection focused on native trees that were well-suited to the local environment and contributed to the ecological balance. Various types of saplings like Neem, Pungan, Guava, Mango, Jack fruit etc were planted.

Women Welfare - International Women’S Day Celebrations

The Women Welfare Cell of the College has been in operation since the inception of the college. The foremost objective of this cell is to safeguard the self-esteem and rights of the women students; empowering them to take part in all the activities of the college and there by make them to feel that they are no longer inferior to men. Student counselors are there to render help to the girl students in need.

International Women’s day is celebrated in our college every year. This year it was celebrated on 8 March 2023 by Women Development Cell in a grand manner.

About 1200 girl students and 75 lady faculty members and Management dignitaries participated in the celebration. Women’s Development Cell was established in the college for the upliftment of girl students of rural areas.

Tmt. G. Lakshmi, Inspector of Police, Mailam, Villupuram District was the Chief Guest of this year’s program. The program started traditionally with devotional songs. Competitions like flower arrangement, Cookery, Soap art, Crafts and games were arranged for student and lady faculty members. The prize winners were awarded by the Chief Guest and gave an excellent speech on Women empowerment. At the end of the celebration various cultural events were conducted.

Sports Activities

Sport is an activity that Mailam Engineering College is often engaged in competitively and is governed by a set of rules or customs in our Physical Education Department. Used by itself, sports commonly refer to activity where the physical capabilities of our Mailam Engineering College players are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome – the winning or losing, but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motors where mental acuity or equipment quality are the major factors. All sports of our college have a winning player or team and a losing player or team. If there is no loser or winner its not a sport. The Management gave us to which Physical Education Department put center around physical health and character building. The vast recourses laid on for physical education in our college and city league programs are justified by appeal to the presumed increases features of modern sport activity which be speak this rationale.

Physical Education Department served a political function. Capitalism supports a division of sports into ‘theirs’ and ‘ours’ into workers sports and bourgeois sports. The working class must use sports to bring back students from their lonely, tortured and shattered world to their rightful human dignity. Great importance is given to pursue excellence in sports in MEC. The college has all the necessary infrastructure for developing growing talents and sports personalities. Good infrastructure is available within the campus to facilitate practice in indoor and outdoor games.

There are well-groomed outdoor play fields for Cricket, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Ball Badminton, Athletics etc. An indoor stadium built on par with standards is available for games such as Badminton, Table tennis. A well equipped gym for students is also available in the same complex.

The college has an impressive record of performance in National and State level sporting events. Every year Sports persons are honoured and encouraged with cash awards and scholarships. Budding and interested sports persons are spotted early and special training is given to them. With each passing year, MEC has turned out an increasing number of sports personalities.

The Department of Physical Education functions actively throughout the year from 5.30 am to 7.00 pm. It works under the guidance of the Physical Education Director with the assistance of Physical training instructor.

MECZION and MEC News

MECZION is the Annual Magazine of Mailam Engineering College. It is released at the end of every academic year. MECZION marks the culmination of all the activities of MEC. The paramount objective of the magazine is to call for and collect good articles from the staff and students, both technical and non-technical. It showcases the best articles that are handpicked by the editorial committee comprising both faculty and students. It gives a great opportunity for them to exhibit their caliber to others.

Apart from the Annual Magazine, a college News letter called MECNEWS is also released biannually. It speaks of the departmental activities and the achievements of staff and students.
